HPE:

Teachers are primarily responsible for establishing behavior patterns in the classroom, and school officials say part of curbing discipline problems includes helping educators cultivate better relationships with students.

Eric Becoats, chief of staff for Guilford County Schools, says efforts to address the high suspension rate include staff development training for teachers.

The root of student problems, Becoats said, sometimes revolves around an “issue of culture” that teachers may not necessarily be in synch with or can relate to.

Hank Wall, director of the nonprofit Brothers Organized to Save Others, says oftentimes students come into the classroom with “baggage” that teachers and other school personnel may not be aware of. And problems at home can play out in the school setting.

I guess figuring out how to get in synch with students’ various cultures really will require five extra days.
