At today’s State Board of Education, SBE Chairman Bill Harrison read a memo from Governor Perdue’s office that directed him to lay the hammer down on charter schools. This appears to be part of an ongoing effort to appease the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), a multi-million dollar special interest group that uses its considerable resources to lobby against charter schools.

Harrison and no-friend-to-charters Melissa Bartlett will co-chair an ad hoc committee on charter schools designed to impose additional regulations on charters. I believe that the committee is an internal one, which means that charter schools will not have representation on the committee.

Proposals may include closing charters that do not demonstrate success within three (3) years and forcing charters to have an “affirmative action” admissions policy.
