The Greensboro News & Record has cut loose 41 staffers.

The paper cited declining ad revenue as the reason.

Greensboro uber-blogger Ed Cone has more actual details here. Details like how a hiring freeze and attrition were tried first by the paper’s management and how there is a sense that there are more layoffs to come. Details like 11 full-time and 6 part-time staffers were part of the hit.

Needless to say, this does not bode well for the Uptown paper of record. As we’ve noted in the past, McClatchy ad revenue has also been falling. Falling while trying to service a massive debt burden. Unless McClatchy suddenly finds some sort of economy of scale — particularly within its hegemony in the Carolinas — it is hard to see how the company can avoid ordering similar cuts in the near future.
