Manny Bloom will be back as Northwest Guilford’s basketball coach, but GCS officials still decline to elaborate on the nature of his discipline. Northwest athletics director John Hughes says not even he knows the nature of the discipline.

Meanwhile, I’ve been following GCS’ budget discussions and all I can do is scratch my head. I realize the board is waiting on a final state budget, and it’s already made a $12 million cut that’s eliminated teachers jobs.

But as they face possible budget cuts of between $30 and $40 million, I can’t help but notice — based on what I read in the paper — that the board is focusing on cuts that will “save a few dollars here and there,” as board member Jeff Belton put it. A prime example is the board’s debate over whether to cut the International Baccalaureate program at Smith High School, which would save —hold on to your hat —- a whopping $73,500. Another possibility is eliminating (at some point) transportation for kids who transfer out of their district. That would save $1.6 million, according to the N&R.

Fellow board member Garth Hebert put it better when he said the board was “expecting more meat and we got a lot of pudding.”

I haven’t picked my copy of the Rhino* yet, I’m sure they’ll have more.

*I know it’s already online, but what can I say, I like to sit down with the print edition. Same goes with the N&R —- I can’t quit you!
