hhColor me meh over all the brave talk coming from Nick Mackey supporters on an electoral payback for the Mecklenburg County commission.

First show me credible candidates who can and will run in district and at-large commission races. Hint, Craig Madans ain’t one of them. Part of the reason the Democrats on the commission went ahead and voted Chipp Bailey in as sheriff is that none of the names floated as vessels of pro-Mackey sentiment thus far seem particularly fearsome to them. That and no doubt word has come down from The Powers That Be that campaign funding will not be an issue.

And let’s not forget that there would have been a political price to pay had the county commission allowed Mackey to take office as sheriff. In fact, the blowback against Democratic incumbents could have and would have been channeled through presumably more credible Republican candidates in November. As such Democrats on the commission opted for the smaller, more containable fight.

However.

Come November and with Hillary Clinton as the party’s standard bearer, the situation would be ripe for scads of local Democrats to stay at home. This could be enough to tilt at-large commission races Republican. Then again, with John McCain at the top of their ticket….

I’m just hoping for a Clinton-McCain-Bloomberg-Nader-Paul five-way cage match. If those choices make the North Carolina ballot I’ll dance a gig jig — and scan the skies for lightning bolts.
