The Chronicle of Higher Education has a real sob story. The “Labor Studies” Department at Univ. of Massachusetts – Amherst isn’t being allowed to fill a faculty vacancy. The head of the department whines, “We believe strongly that this is retaliation for both our union activity and our political activity on campus.” But since the union activity and political activity has nothing to do with properly teaching students, I’d say that the department ought to consider itself lucky to continue to exist at all.

It’s because of crud like Labor Studies that a college education at most schools costs far more than it needs to.
