If you think ludicrous spending stops at the state level, think again.  One particularly glaring example of misunderstanding the role of government is the funding of municipal golf courses. Dr. Micheal Sanera has made a living off of pointing out the cost to towns of operating these facilities.  The overview is that city-owned golf courses lose money and are sometimes funded even if cities are strapped for cash.  City government’s marriage to subsidizing ends up costing taxpayers in the long run. Burlington and Sanford are the most recent recipients of this news.  In Burlington, reviews are mixed.  But in Sanford, residents and the Sanford Herald‘s editorial pages spoke out against the golf course because the city appears poised to raise taxes instead of cutting financial losses such as the golf course.
