The Uptown paper of record is reporting that Mecklenburg County Commissioner Valerie Woodward will not support the $621 million bond sought by CMS. Woodward, a Democrat, now becomes the swing vote on the bond issue.

The four Republicans on the commission have drawn a line in the sand at the $486 million number supported by the Citizens’ Capital Advisory Committee last week. County Manager Harry Jones will try to find a number that will get five votes.

Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts meanwhile professes bafflement over disagreeing on “a number.”

The number determines how much the county will have to raise property taxes, Jennifer. You know, the numbers you pledged to keep down when you took office.
