I was willing to let the firing of UNC football coach John Bunting pass without much of a mention, but his stubborn refusal to admit the move was needed merits a quick “Hah!” if nothing else.

After six years on the job Bunting fielded one of the worst teams in Div. I football. He did this despite getting to handpick his top assistants and their very hefty salaries after last season. Bunting has recruited the player talent his way as well, and by all accounts has more than enough raw skill on board to produce something besides a rolling laughing stock.

But that is what the football program under Bunting has become — a punch line. UNC may never challenge for football national titles, but it absolutely should be able to field a decent ACC football team, play above .500 on a regular basis — not Bunting’s .300 clip of late — and otherwise represent the university well.

That Bunting does not seem to understand this is a minimum standard is clear proof that the Bunting era is past.
