It is official. The Wachovia Tower is no more. Duke Energy is announcing that it has reached an agreement with Wells Fargo to double its space in Uptown’s newest skyscaper and rename it Duke Energy HQ.

Expect more on this as details trickle out.

Update: Wells-chovia will continue to own the building, but 500K square feet will now go to Duke, which will rename the 48-story tower Duke Energy Center. Duke will start to move in as soon as the building is finished next year.

Duke will occupy 21 floors, up from 10 in the original lease agreement. The energy company also upped the length of its lease from 15 years to 20 years on what it termed “a favorable cost structure.” I bet.

Now the only question is if McClatchy moves any ops across the street as it tries to unload real estate across the country.

Update II: Here are the CBJ and Uptown paper stories. The latter hints that Wells-chovia still does not know how many bodies it will have in Charlotte next year.
