First, congrats to Cal Ripken, Jr. on his first-ballot selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I was lucky enough to see Cal play several times in Baltimore, he even homered a couple times, deep into the Bawlmer night. That is Cal’s great legacy — a big, strapping homer-hitting guy playing shortstop everyday.

Of course, local baseball fans know about — and some may even remember — Cal’s two seasons in Charlotte. Never personally saw him play in Dilworth, but I do remember WSOC’s Harold Johnson getting very excited talking over O’s highlights.
