Just when I had nearly given up all hope that the quality of this year?s political candidates in North Carolina would remain mediocre, here comes Morganton?s Anne Fischer, a candidate for the Democratic primary in the 10th Congressional District seat being vacated by longtime Rep. Cass Ballenger.

Fischer, it seems, has a straightforward explanation for North Carolina?s unemployment problems: the world?s overpopulation problem, caused by a lack of family-planning programs funded by U.S. taxpayers. Also, she argues that Congress should raise the national minimum wage to $12 an hour to combat poverty ? I’m puzzled she didn?t push for $20 an hour, which would reduce poverty even more ? and mourns the American encroachment onto Saddam Hussein?s “sovereignty.?

I am overwhelmed with gratitude. The election season is hereby redeemed.
