Just one day after endorsing Sandy Carmany for District 5, the N&R reports that Carmany is postponing her forum on gang violence under political pressure from District 2 incumbent Goldie Wells.

I don’t know what Wells’ constitutents are telling her, of anything. The logic behind her protest escapes me:

Wells said a concern she had heard was that by raising awareness of gang indicators in the community, students might be made to feel that they have to prove they are not in a gang to avoid persecution.

I guess what she’s saying is we want to make sure we don’t offend anyone by addressing gang violence. The way I see it, either we have a problem with gang violence or we don’t. Sources as wide-rangng from the Greensboro Police Department to write-in mayoral candidate Billy Jones (certainly no shill for the GPD) have said we do, so I’m inclined to believe it must be true.

With that in mind, Carmany’s unwise to knuckle under to such political pressure one week before the election. It could cost her.
