Take a moment to appreciate how North Carolina’s best investigative reporter has ensnared Mike Easley and the Down East kleptocracy in an awkward lie.
Recall a week ago Carrington first reported that Easley had received secret, freebie air service from cronies dating back to the 2000 campaign. This caused Easley’s defenders to rush out to point to 2005 payments to air charter arms and suggest the the state Democratic Party picked up the tab instead.
This allowed Carrington to press for more detail on those supposed payments and — there is none. Better still, he has shown that Easley’s high-flying cronies whom he appointed to various state boards and offices did not fully disclose all their aviation business interests on state disclosure reports.
Next up, in any jurisdiction governed by law, a criminal investigation into that little oversight. Let’s see if that happens.
