Roy’s paper on a state law that limits access to medical technology gained some attention in Wilson yesterday, but Good Hope Hospital
continues its three-year struggle to receive a Certificate of Need
(CON) for an expansion that is necessary for it to continue serving
Medicaid and Medicare patients.
“The CON laws help not-for-profit hospitals sustain themselves,”
Dr. Jeffrey Jones told the Wilson Daily News. Without the laws,
“Not-for-profit hospitals would basically not survive.”
So, does that mean for-profit hospitals can provide the same
services for less money? Or does it mean that Good Hope Hospital is a
small sacrifice for the larger good of protecting other hospitals?
