Even in liberal Chapel Hill, a lot of residents were stunned by the town council’s vote last week to give health benefits to retiring council members. According to the News & Observer, council member Laurin Easthom says it was a big mistake and the council will rescind the vote tonight. From the story:

Earlier today, Easthom said on her blog, The Easthom Page, that council members faced a 9.5 pound agenda package for last week’s meeting and that the health benefits vote was not on her front burner.

“That’s no excuse for passing it,” Easthom wrote. She goes on to say that the council is not set in its ways or selfish and that she is confident the council will reopen the issue.

“I hope we abolish this ordinance once and for all,” she writes.
