Charlotte meaning the city itself as well as the suburbs where many people that work there live, has expanded out over the past decades to the north (Huntersville, Iredell County etc.), south (Rock Hill), and east (Cabarrus and Union counties). Charlotte though hasn’t really grown out much to the west. That may finally be about to change as Crescent Communities and Lincoln Harris have announced an “enormous” (as the Charlotte Observer’s headline writer put it) development between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the Catawba River. Enormous as in a projected eventual 4,000 residences, 500,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and other retail, and 8 million square feet of office space. That could definitely be a game changer.
Bonus thought: Will, 20 years from now, this announcement be seen as a key step in revitalizing Gaston County? While the new development is in Mecklenburg County, pushing Charlotte to the west definitely helps Mecklenburg County’s western neighbor too.
