In a truly bizarre move, 50 Massachusetts teachers joined the Massachusetts Federation of Teachers, a branch of the American Federation of Teachers union. One charter school administrator points out the obvious, “Charter-school teachers need to read that the same organization that hates them wants them to join.” Indeed, in a widely publicized 2002 report on charter schools, the AFT railed against every aspect of the charter school movement and recommended that legislators halt the expansion of charter schools. Nevertheless, AFT’s recent decline in membership has led to their new recruitment strategy, a strategy that will likely surface in other states with large numbers of charter schools.
