Here’s a meaty take on the attempt to increase North Carolina’s pathetically low cap on charter schools. State Rep. Thom Tillis is trying to pitch an increase in the cap from 100 to 125 — still far too low to meet the demand from parents — as a cost-saving measure.

Charter schools only get state funding for instruction, not for physical plant. That’s strictly BYOB. Bring Your Own Building. As such, Tillis notes, your basic charter school student costs the state about half as much to educate.

And let’s not forget the “to educate” part vis a vis the educrats who distrust the charter school option. They defend a system that far too often leaves out the “educate” part.
