Topic of discussion: HB30 — Raise cap on charter schools

House Education committee met at 11:00.

Rep Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenberg) introduced a proposed committee substitute that guts the original bill and replaces it with language that establishes a study committee (five Representatives and five Senators) that would look at the success of charter schools and make recommendations (which could include raising or lifting the cap) to the 2008 General Assembly for legislation.

Proposed committee substitute receives a favorable report.

Bottom line: Raising the cap on charters is once again off the table.
