Charlotte is up to 33 homicides this year, 10 more than last year at this time.

Funny, that 24 percent jump in the murder rate is a stat missing from CMPD’s official spin on crime in Charlotte. In fact, the only increase in crime CMPD quantified with a percentage-rate increase was larceny from vehicles, a subset of the larger property crime problem.

There were 83 murders in all of 2006, 85 in 2005. If we keep up with a 30-murder a quarter pace, we’ll wind up with 120 murders for 2007.

Some might consider that news.

Update: I see in my print edition of the Uptown paper of record that the homicide jump gets all of a two graf box at the bottom of B2.
