Durham school officials admit that many parents and students are not satisfied with the school system and are looking for a way out via charter schools. Minnie Forte-Brown, chairwoman of the Durham school board, keenly observes, “It’s a signal that perhaps they are displeased.”

But instead of figuring out why these parents are unhappy and then improving the district schools accordingly, Durham school officials are going after charter schools because they supposedly “harm the district.” Superintendent Carl Harris is pulling out all of the usual complaints: money drain, academic performance, etc. Just call charter parents stupid, Carl, and get it over with.

But parents in Durham see through the spin and continue to demand more charter school seats. Good for them.
