Here’s the quick-and-dirty math: Enrollment projected to be up 3 percent, money requested from Mecklenburg County up 8 percent.

Not 5 or 4 percent, but 8 just a tad off the double-digit increases we’ve been experiencing in government spending in recent years. I think the county is staring a property tax rate increase in the face without an added $28 million for CMS, partly due to the debt service load the county now carries. A large part of that, of course, represents capital spending for CMS.

County Manager Harry Jones is going to have a fun couple of weeks trying to make the numbers work in an election year.
