Americans have a long history of reaching out to help neighbors in need. Go to any church on any Sunday, or to any civic club on any weeknight, and you’ll find multiple service and volunteer efforts underway. Many who volunteer and donate on a regular basis don’t boast about it.

They simply do the work.

But in today’s societal climate, it seems a lot of people wait for government to tell them what to do. While I agree with the First Lady’s belief that service is important, I completely disagree that a government program and government cheerleading is necessary to get people motivated. And the notion that somehow commitment to service is a newfangled idea from the Obama administration is ludicrous and does a disservice to those who’ve been making a real difference for years.
