Among the audience members at last Saturday’s higher education
conference, hosted by the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, was
Mal Kline of Accuracy in Academia. This week, Kline published multiple
conference-related stories on his web site, www.campusreportonline.net, based on
presentations made at the event. In one, Kline highlighted
Professor Nan Miller’s comments on declining standards for writing and
the study of literature. In another, he featured comments by Professor Murray Sperber,
author of Beer & Circus: How Big-time College Sports is Crippling
Undergraduate Education
. A third story focused on taboo subjects in the politically correct campus environment, as discussed by Duke University Professor John Staddon. Finally, Kline wrote about professional censorship
experienced by conference speaker and UNC-Wilmington Professor Mike
Adams. Kline also made room on his site for a commentary by George
Leef on grade inflation.
In a related media appearance, Leef was a guest on Friday’s edition of
“True North,” broadcast
on WDEV Radio in Vermont, where he talked about the conference’s
general theme: the overselling of higher education. A subject mentioned
repeatedly by conference speakers — diversity efforts on campuses —
was the focus of a story in Friday’s Durham’s Herald Sun, with quotes from Leef. The piece detailed
the work and 58-page report produced by a UNC-Chapel Hill diversity
task force, whose chairman characterized diversity as  “sort of a
tricky concept.”
