Charles Murray will speak tonite at Davidson, a chance to hear one of the first critics of the modern welfare state. He’s moved on to replacing the welfare state in his just-released book In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State.

Murray proposes to end welfare — boom — just like that. In place of all the billions spent on various dysfunctional and unsustainable entitlement programs, Murray would institute a new program that gives each citizen an annual $10,000 cash grant, beginning at age 21. The catch? You would be required to buy health insurance with $3,000 of that money and put aside $2,000 for retirement, leaving $5,000 to go nuts with. Or not, provided you do not make more than $50,000, in which case the extra 5K is taxed back by guv’mint.

Intrigued? Thought so.

Tickets are free and the event starts at 8pm, but call ahead to box office at 704-894-2340 for tix.
