OK, asked this vital fiscal question of Mecklenburg County commish candidates the other day. Thus far we have responses from commissioners Clarke, James, and Bentley and from candidates Walker, McLeod, Cooksey, Jordan, and Kommareddi.
That’s a good start and the thoughtful answers are really appreciated. But we’ve yet to hear anything from any of the Democratic at-large candidates. Let’s give ’em a few more days to think it over.
Bonus Observation: What do you know — the credit crunch has hit Mecklenburg County. Gee, who has been running his yap about that one coming? The county was planning to sell $375m. worth of bonds in January, but softening market conditions and higher interest rates have already chopped that back to $220m. Upshot, those new schools you voted for in 2005 will be delayed, ditto CPCC projects.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if the number edged even lower.
