Food deserts are a pretty hot topic, and there’s a lot of discussion about how to address the issue – areas where a significant portion of the population doesn’t have access to affordable, nutritious food.  So I loved seeing this piece today: “From mobile farmers’ markets to public transportation: local organizations creating solutions for food deserts” on Port City Daily’s site.

They highlight four organizations that are working on the issue.  And yes, there’s the public transit authority.  And yes, some of the other groups get some government funding.  But a lot of it is privately-funded non-profit work.  It’s encouraging to see, as we talk about so much at the Locke Foundation, that non-governmental groups can bring creative solutions to these sorts of big problems – often more effectively than the government itself.
