eSchool News Online reports that George Bush wants to cut $3.2 billion from the education budget. The cuts would target programs that are no longer of any use, either because they achieved their goal or because they did not work. Educational technology (useless) would be the hardest hit area. Hooray!

Last week, NEA President Reg Weaver complained that No Child Left Behind has been underfunded, whatever that means. Funding for No Child Left Behind initiatives will likely not be cut, which is unfortunate. There is a lot of wasted NCLB money out there.

With a budget of nearly $55 billion, the U.S. Department of Education could use a serious crash diet. Bush’s cuts are a good start but clearly do not go far enough.
