Elitism leaps off the page in this Daily Tar Heel editorial about UNC’s effort to expand online degree programs. According to the self centered editorial, online courses are OK for the hayseeds out in the sticks, but not for real intellectuals like them. Consider this excerpt:

We don’t deny the appeal of online courses – they are an outstanding way to get some form of education even if you can’t be close to a university. But the problem comes when you attach the name of UNC to an online degree and make it equal to a regular degree.

The quality of education received in an online program just doesn’t measure up to the education received in a classroom setting.

I have no doubt that, like all university courses, the quality varies depending on the professor and the interest and hard work of the students. But to universally trash a delivery vehicle is just silly and arrogant. This gentlemen agrees.
