The push for school merger continues in Davidson County, this time from Lexington City Manager John Gray as part of his budget presentation.

The way I read it, the Journal article frames the debate in terms of higher student achievement. But when you take a look at the highlights of the Lexington city budget, this jumps out:

With the devastating manufacturing plant closings resulting in tremendous wealth and job losses in Lexington, citizens and businesses can no longer afford the additional 13 cent supplemental city schools tax.

It’s good that Gray recognizes that fact. But, as with all city budgets, you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. So you have to wonder if the elimination of the school tax will only give the city more leeway to expand other services.
