Much to their credit, the City of Asheville will finally take seriously the prospect of getting out of the business of subsidizing golf. Several years ago, Councilwoman Holly Jones expressed her opinion that the city’s involvement was crazy, and Councilman Dr. Carl Mumpower referred to it as “middle-class welfare at its best.” Next Tuesday, council will vote on whether or not to enter into a management agreement with Pope Golf. If all goes according to the plan, Pope will pay the city set amounts every year instead of the city robbing working Peter to pay golfing Paul.
