After election tensions appear to be running high. Two-term Democratic incumbent Van Braxton, recently defeated by Republican challenger Stephen LaRoque in the midterm election, has been accused of assault.

Reports the Kinston Free Press:

State Rep. Van Braxton, D-Lenoir, has already spent months going through a bruising campaign, and now he must deal with a police investigation in the wake of an accusation that he assaulted a Lenoir County man.

Ray Wiley, 50, of 2820 Falling Creek Road, filed an incident report with the Lenoir County Sheriff?s Office late last week.

Braxton could not be contacted Monday despite six attempts to reach him ? one visit to his house, three calls to his cell phone and two calls to his home phone.

Wiley said Braxton, 59, of 1512 Surry St. in Kinston, came to his house around 4:30 p.m. last Thursday with another man, argued with Wiley about a campaign sign that had been placed along the roadway next to his property and shoved him against a door.

?I had one (person) behind me and the other in front of me, and I didn?t know what they were going to do because both of them were threatening me,? Wiley said, recalling the incident Monday.
