Remember this decision by the Durham commissioners to hand out $1,000 bonuses to employees when, next year, they start crying about their need for more money. They say they’re doing it because employees haven’t received raises since Fall 2008. Newsflash: the economy is in tatters. You don’t give out raises — or bonuses — in very tough times, particularly when you know you may be facing less state aid next year. Only Commissioner Heron, who voted against the bonuses, appears willing to accept reality.
