I think Rep. Alma Adams was being a bit melodramatic when making the case making the case to keep the state’s temporary taxes:

The $300 million generated by those taxes next year is needed to spend on important programs for people who can’t help themselves, said Rep. Alma Adams, D-Guilford, chairwoman of the N.C. Legislative Black Caucus.

The loss of these revenues “would devastate our state, our state’s economy and our citizens,” Adams said. “The people of our state have many unmet needs and we’re constantly struggling to keep up with the growth.”
