Too often, many of us do. Even at the holidays, it’s all too easy to discount the incredible opportunity, freedom and safety this country affords us. This story in Smithsonian magazine tells of a Somali Bantu refugee family that left behind Africa for Phoenix. Said the grateful father, “We can live in peace. There is a law in America: nobody can take your life. That’s what makes me believe in peace. I want my children to havea good education up to college level and me too. I want to live like the people who live in America — only better. I want to work.” This piece is an excellent reminder of our many blessings as Americans.
