Becki discussed this last week, but it is worth another mention:

If you care about the regulation of private wells, you should be aware that last year’s drought bill likely authorizes the regulation of water use from private wells!

Tomorrow, a critical bill will be heard in the House Water Resources and Infrastructure Committee at 2:00.

The bill, HB 1429, introduced by Rep. Lewis (R-Harnett), would make it perfectly clear that private wells can’t be regulated.

I can’t imagine any legitimate opposition.  The only possible argument may be something that inaccurately describes what the bill allows such as “we don’t need the bill because wells can’t be regulated.”

Simple counterargument: If that’s true and private wells can’t be regulated now, then opponents should have no problem supporting HB 1429 because it simply confirms that private wells are off-limits to the government.

The government has no business regulating water use from private wells.  This bill would protect private well owners.
