Here’s some unsettling news for parents of teenagers who attend the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, a residential school for the best and brightest juniors and seniors that’s part of the UNC System. Because of safety concerns due to a recent mugging, the students have a new “sunset” curfew. Curfew used to be 10:30 p.m. It’s sad for the kids and sad for the law abiding residents of the area. From the Daily Tar Heel:

After the Feb. 17 mugging on the corner of Maryland Avenue and Sprunt Street, students are no longer permitted on the perimeter of the campus after sunset, including areas such as the athletic fields.

“We are trying to eliminate our students from being in that area because they won’t be targets if they are not in that area,” said Harry Tucker, NCSSM director of campus resources and security.
