Local media outlets are making a fuss about Ellen Frost being appointed as vice chair for the Buncombe County Commissioners. (1, 2, 3) Maybe it is because Bill Stanley couldn’t fill the role anymore since he is not a commissioner. Maybe it is because across the street, the vice mayor is traditionally the highest vote getter, but freshman Frost won her seat in a tightly contested race that went back and forth before she won by seventeen votes. That wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t that Frost and her former opponent have both made it clear they will run again. Furthermore, that race determined which party would have the majority on the board. [That was your subtle cue to act astonished and deny that politicians should concern themselves with political parties.] The third maybe could be because nobody explained why Frost should have the honor. Commissioner Mike Fryar voted against Frost’s appointment without explanation. The fourth maybe, you guessed it, is . . .
. . . slow news day.
