Anyone who knows the history of Greensboro’s efforts to redevelop the corner of Lee and South Elm streets should not be surprised that the city would hand over land and provide infrastructure for the fledgling downtown university campus, recently rebranded Union Square Campus.

Question is who will provide the “substantial private money” to get the campus up and running by 2016. Former City Manager and Opportunity Greensboro Chairman Ed Kitchen says “so far, everybody likes the model.” But liking the model and parting with real money are two different things. In which case the campus will keep turning to the city for funding.
