Last week, I reported that the State Board of Education took steps to strengthen their hold over the state’s charter schools. This included dissolving the Charter School Advisory Committee.

Today, DPI’s Office of Charter Schools released a statement that explained this move.

As a part of this [State Board of Education] restructuring plan, the State Board of Education dissolved the Charter School Advisory Committee at their April 5, 2007 Board meeting. This restructuring will allow for more in depth involvement of the SBE in working with the Office of Charter Schools, and individual schools in governance, finance, and academic accountability, as well as streamlining committee budgets and eliminating duplication of spending.

Keep in mind that the issue was not listed as an agenda item and they took the vote very quickly during the “Chairman’s Remarks” portion of the agenda. Put simply, they pulled a fast one on the charter schools in the state.
