Facing a primary challenge from Charlotte lawyer Nick Mackey, Huntersville state Rep. Drew Saunders today joined Charlotte’s own Beverly Earle and 10 other Dems in voting to censure Wilmington state Rep. Thomas Wright instead of expelling him. Earle and Saunders then turned around and joined the 109-5 vote to expel Wright.
I’m open to other descriptions, but that looks like pandering to me. Unless Saunders was having flashbacks to trying to keep the old Jim Black gang together. Wright, like Saunders, was close to the former speaker and current federal prisoner.
