On this date in 1836, Aaron Burr died. Among many things, including serving as Vice President during the Jefferson administration and later being accused of treason, Burr is noted for his duel with Alexander Hamilton.
Duels were not unusual during the early 1800s. Until November 1802, duels were legal in North Carolina. The duel to end all duels in the state occurred between Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight and state legislator John Stanly, both of New Bern. This commentary describes the momentous event.
