In fairness, Guilford County Schools Board of Education member Ed Price indeed represents a bit of change the board has undergone over the last few years. An outspoken High Point property developer and a Republican, Price certainly doesn’t fit the image some might have of your average school board member. Keep that in mind as the Rhino reports how Price recently schooled the rest of the board on Sen. Trudy Wade’s controversial bill:

Price’s “dumb ol’ Ed” routine is an act – and one that has helped him accomplish more for High Point than any other High Point school board member in recent memory. But sometimes he drops the act and gets serious.

On Thursday, it might have made sense, as Price said, to have the legislative discussion earlier, when the boardroom was full and people watching at home hadn’t fallen asleep. First, Wade’s Senate Bill 317 is a local bill that applies only to the Guilford County school board. It’s natural for the school board and Guilford County residents to have an opinion on it.

“I have a lot of respect for Sen. Wade,” Price said. “I think she’s a fine person. I’ve worked with her in the past. I just think she’s flat-out wrong on this proposal. I think it’s purely politically based. And that’s not to say that the other party, when they’ve been in power, haven’t done the same thing.”

Price attacked Wade’s bill for making decisions on Guilford County in Raleigh.

Which begs Paul Clark’s question—- considering the fact that the GCS board “is traditionally out in front in lobbying for and against bills,” why are they not mounting a vociferous lobby against Wade’s bill?

Meanwhile, the High Point Enterprise says Wade’s bill “should not move forward because it would be detrimental to the school board’s functions and operations.”
