I’m not sure how this would affect Durham, a conspicuous member of a group of left-wing cities that have proclaimed themselves “sanctuary cities.” Colorado Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo, an aggressive anti-illegal immigration House member, sponsored an amendment to the Homeland Security funding bill that would deny emergency services funds to so-called sanctuary cities. Tancredo’s measure had failed many times in the past but on Friday it passed — overwhelmingly. Some 49 Democrats voted for the measure. The final vote was 234-189. Durham’s Democratic Rep. David Price, sponsor of the funding bill, was not among the 49 Democrats voting for Tancredo’s amendment.

Pro-illegal immigration members were “stunned.” Those outside the Beltway, however, who read blogs that give good feeling for the pulse of the populace, were not surprised. Common sense is prevailing, it seems. The rank file out here understand that you don’t reward lawbreakers, which is what illegals are. Get it. They’re called illegals. That’s a clue. Of course, it will probably never get through the Senate, which has sold out to the illegal-immigration lobby, but it also probably means the Senate immigration reform “compromise” will also die in the House. Checkmate, at least until the Senate begins feeling the heat the House members are feeling. Then all bets are off.

So, Durham. So, City Council. The ball is in your court. After you handle all the lawsuits that will surely come due to the Durham Police Department’s actions in the Duke lacrosse case, maybe you should scrap that dumb “Sanctuary City” moniker you laid on Durham. That is if you have enough revenue left to even hold a meeting by then.
