Sixth graders at Erwin Middle School are learning groupthink. An intern from WCU spearheaded the project in which students, in groups of four or five, spent seven weeks writing a letter to the editor for publication. The Citizen-Times, for whatever reason, did not intersperse these letters with the others, but published them in their own box. Most letters began with “Dear citizens of Asheville.” Three of them complained about urban lumberjacking in Asheville. One suggested taking even faster showers and turning off the water when brushing one’s teeth to help conserve water, while another recommended sprinkling water on the yard to prevent forest fires in times of drought. Three explicitly appealed to government to save us from environmental destruction.
