Does the latest round of changes at the Uptown paper of record include the departure of editorial page honcho Ed Williams? That’s the word on the street. Guess we’ll find out in tomorrow’s paper. Maybe.

Meanwhile, the paper blunders on in a pointless attempt to gin-up display ads in paper. As publisher Ann Caulkins mentioned the other day, the QC McClatchy portfolio includes a number of specialty magazine outlets. Or did. Word is that they have been especially hard hit by reductions in ad sales staff. Good plan.

One of the biggest changes in Charlotte’s publishing landscape over the past 10 or so years is the explosive growth of all the alt-publications, from many different sources. There manifestly seems plenty of support for those types of publications in this market, but McClatchy seems willing to trim back in that space in order to prop up a failing daily newspaper model.

What a train wreck.
