First “they” said the House budget would eliminate 6,000 teaching positions, then they said 10,000, then they said 12,000, and now they say 18,000. (These estimates do not include instructional support or administrative personnel.)

As Bob Luebke of the Civitas Institute pointed out, the current NC Department of Public Instruction estimate is 6,005 teaching positions eliminated next year (and possibly 2,500 positions a year after). Some of these positions will be eliminated via normal attrition.
