Today’s N&O reports that the EU has deleted 100 pages of regulations that prohibit the sale of “fruits and vegetables that may be crooked, bent or twisted–but otherwise good enough to eat.” You know, missshapen mushrooms and grotesque  garlic. (26 fruits and vegetables were regulated)

Only in the EU does it take 100 pages to prohibit ugly fruit. On second thought, US food regulators are probably not far behind.

Score one for the free market.  But not so fast. This is the EU after all, the world leader in nonsense regulations.    The last paragraph makes it clear that:

“Pretty-food” standards remain in effect for apples, strawberries, citrus fruit, kiwi, lettuce, pears, peaches, nectarines, sweet peppers, table grapes and tomatoes.
