North Carolina is one of only a handful of states that exercise control over liquor distribution and sales. More than 170 local boards operate more than 430 ABC stores as part of a complex and burdensome labyrinth of rules and regulations. Efforts to jettison the outdated system have been discussed for years, but so far, powerful forces who support the control system have prevailed. In this conversation, we’ll talk with leaders who favor freeing the industry from the Prohibition-era system and discuss the challenges and opportunities that could be ahead by converting to a privatized system.
